This album is the soundtrack to the 2025 documentary "The Unfinished," directed by Davis Guggenheim. The film focuses on the final years and creative life of the legendary Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, chronicling his battle with illness and his reflections on music, life, and mortality.

The score is a unique posthumous collaboration. Composer Alex Heffes, a friend of Sakamoto, was given access to the maestro's final, unfinished sketches and demo recordings. Using these themes as a foundation, Heffes crafted a complete score that complements and frames Sakamoto's original compositions. As such, the soundtrack is more than just film music; it is a dialogue between two composers, where one completes the artistic statement of the other, preserving its spirit and unique style.
