Brooklyn Dreams - Joy Ride (1979)

Recorded in both Munich and Los Angeles, Brooklyn Dreams' third LP pairs the trio with arranger/Giorgio Moroder protégé Thor Baldursson, creating a fascinating frisson between postmodern Teutonic electro-pop and old-school New York doo wop. Despite its melting-pot approach, Joy Ride remains first and foremost a showcase for the group's potent harmonies, which boast a new complexity and nuance. If anything, Baldursson's icily robotic grooves only underscore the humanity of Brooklyn Dreams' vocal interplay. Still, like their previous LPs Joy Ride suffers from inconsistent material. It's virtually impossible not to wince at both the sound and sentiment of a track like "Hot Lovin'."
