The distinguished French composer and philologist François-Bernard Mâche chose titles taken from the rivers of the Underworld for his dark-hued Styx and Léthé. Areg refers in its title to the sands of the Sahara and Mesarthim to the double star of the constellation of the Ram, works that explore the nuances of piano resonances, as Debussy had once done. Maurice Ohana belongs to an earlier generation of French composers. In his music he explored ideas and sonorities derived from his interests in Andalusia and Africa and from a wider range of musical and extra-musical references.
