American close harmony (vocal) group, primarily active in the 1920s-1960s.
Formed by the three Minnesota McMichael brothers: tenors Judd (1906–1989) and Joe (1916–1944), and baritone Ted (1908–2001), they assumed the name The Merry Macs in 1933, when they added a female singer, Cheri McKay, and began recording for Victor. In 1936, McKay was replaced by Helen Carroll, in 1939 by Mary Lou Cook. In 1938, the group switched to recording with Decca; soon, they also began to appear in movies. In 1941 or 1942, Cook was replaced by Marjorie Garland. The group continued recording, with changing personnel, until 1964, when it disbanded.
The Merry Macs were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003.
