Five decades after touring the world with Thelonious Monk and recording with almost all representatives of the legendary hard bop scene of the 1960s, Edward "Butch" Warren Jr. finally released an album under his own name. He is 71 years old.
With the exception of working as a full-time bassist for Blue Note Records in New York and a short period of touring, Warren has lived in Washington all his life. But in order to record his own album, Warren needed another international tour.
The music for the French album 5tet was recorded in Paris by a team of four French musicians and broadcast on local radio. The album features full—length material dedicated to Warren, including four original compositions; two classic melodies, the final versions of which he recorded; one of his favorite standards ("Laura"); and a quick excerpt from "The Theme", a classic melodic transition between melodies written by Warren's first known supporter in New York. trumpeter Kenny Dorham.
