Firmly anchored in the various artistic movements of his time, Paul Hindemith (Hanau, 1895 - Frankfurt, 1963) was a composer of sweeping orchestral frescoes and large-scale operas, as well as more minimalist forms, pastiches, and sketches.

Yet, at pivotal moments in his life, he loved to return to his own instrument, the viola, a mirror to which he confided his most intimate moods and through which he explored his questions about composition and history.
