The program that Coordonné recently recorded with the Etcetera label consists of music that lies very close to their hearts. The music of John Dowland runs like a thread through it. More specifically: the “lute song”, the unique way in which Dowland combines lute and voice. They also found in Brel and Barbara that same intimate form of expression and color: a profound dialogue between lute and voice, serving only to give the word more depth and meaning.
This very first CD ‘Terrain Vague’ was released on December 1, 2021. They had the opportunity to talk about their CD on KLARA with Olav Grondelaers during the program Music Matters.
After their highly praised debut Terrain Vague, duo Coordonné proudly presents their second program: La Couleur de l’Ombre. In this new program, mezzo-soprano Anna Nuytten and lutenist Thomas Langlois create a fascinating dialogue between two worlds: the French early baroque and the chanson repertoire of Barbara. At the heart of the program are the Airs de cour, courtly songs from 17th-century France by composers such as Guédron, Moulinié, and Boësset. Despite their aristocratic origins, these songs are surprisingly direct and emotional. They express passions such as longing, sorrow, frustration, and anger – a wide spectrum of human emotions, sung in both refined and raw forms. At the same time, the duo delves into the work of the iconic chansonnière Barbara, whose songs – such as Le Mal de Vivre, L’Aigle Noir, and Septembre – carry an equally deep emotional resonance. Her autobiographical texts are transformed into poetry through music, full of color and nuance. A letter read aloud from Barbara runs like a thread through the concert, subtly linking past and present.
Although these musical styles are separated by centuries, in this program they come together through their shared emotional world, rich language, sober instrumentation, and harmonic depth. La Couleur de l’Ombre is an intimate musical journey that takes the listener through the light and shadow sides of the human soul.
