AT THE CROSSROADS features hornist Patrick Hughes in a richly diverse program of 20th and 21st-century works for horn and piano. Highlights include Hughes’ arrangement of Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns, Laurence Lowe’s lush and lyrical Sonata No. 1, and Scott Millichamp’s Crossroads, built entirely from a single piano motive. Russell Pinkston’s Zylamander pairs live horn with computer-generated electroacoustic accompaniment that adapts in real time, using pitch tracking to create harmonies, counterpoint, and sound samples unique to each performance. The album closes with Hughes’ original composition From Hildegard, a meditation on the 12th-century chant Caritas abundat omnia (Divine Love abounds).
