Internationally acclaimed violinist and composer Midori Komachi, known for bridging Japanese traditions with Western classical and contemporary music, announces the release of her first album of original compositions, Chashitsu: Auditory Tea Room.
Inspired by the sonic journey of Chashitsu (Japanese Tea Room) and Chado (The Way of Tea), this album showcases Komachi’s original compositions that weave together distinctive timbres with field recordings by Nick Luscombe (MSCTY). Conceived and produced by Komachi in collaboration with London and Tokyo based MSCTY, known for their work at the forefront of music and architecture, the project reflects her unique approach to sound, place, and narrative, offering listeners a unique auditory experience.
Blending tradition and innovation, this album invites us to listen differently
This album is a meeting point of tradition and modern sound. The philosophy of Chashitsu is about re-connecting with nature, ourselves, and with each other in harmony. It explores how the Japanese notion of attentive listening to space, where silence holds meaning, unfolds a completely new sound world. Japanese sonic concepts of ‘Ma’ (meaningful silence and space), timbres and gestures are explored throughout to create shifting perspectives. Through this exploration, Chashitsu becomes a ‘sonic architecture’
