Over the past fifty years, a new style of choral writing has emerged in the United States that has captured the imagination of churchgoers and concert goers, as well as record buyers around the world. This style can be described as timeless, spacious and enthusiastic, with an innate depth of visionary and transcendent spirituality. These traits have led to a simple but appropriate description of the "Ecstatic Style."
This collection of unaccompanied choral works by the Selwyn College Choir in Cambridge, under the direction of Sarah MacDonald, was recorded in the incomparable acoustics of the Lady Chapel in Ely Cathedral. She explores the development of the "ecstatic style" from its beginnings in America in the 1940s to the present day, with representative works from major American composers Randall Thompson, Morten Lauridsen and Eric Whitacre to acclaimed British composers John Tavener, Paul Milor, Cecilia McDowell, Alan Bullard and James McMillan, as well as an early British example. in a sublime hymn for two choirs by William Harris, Bring us, O Lord God. The recording also includes a significant number of works by young British composers: Ian Quinn, David Bednell, John Duggan, as well as a new work specially written for this collection by Philip Cook "Eternal Ecstasy" based on words from the works of St. Teresa of Avila. All these works were recorded for the first time.
