Faith Coloccia, Daniel Menche - Smelter (2025)

The album "Smelter" is a collaboration between Faith Coloccia and Daniel Menche, combining piano compositions and field recordings. It is based on Coloccia's piano pieces, which Menche processed into "long drone formations." These were combined with field recordings made by both artists, themed around water in various states (snow, ice, streams, rain). The artists highlight the contrast in their approaches: Coloccia's spontaneous, lo-fi recordings (often made with her son) and Menche's pre-planned, high-fidelity recordings. The album is viewed as an "aural archive" or "time capsule." Menche notes that the lengthy creation process made the music "stronger and stranger," and believes the music's special value lies in its indefinability.
