Sean Mason, a 26-year-old pianist, composer, and producer, is recognized as one of the leading talents of his generation, reviving bebop for the contemporary era. His playing, rooted in jazz tradition (compared to the authority of Ron Carter and the spirit of early Miles Davis), is marked by inventiveness and a sense of urgency. A Grammy nominee, Mason caught the attention of Branford Marsalis during college, leading him to study at Juilliard and immerse himself in the New York jazz scene.

His debut album, The Southern Suite (2023), earned critical acclaim. Mason demonstrates the duality embodied by the Marsalis family legacy: a deep reverence for history and an insistence on keeping the music vital in the present. His compositions tell stories, blending precision with emotional generosity and a Southern sensibility. Mason quickly established himself as a sought-after session player and trio leader, holding a residency at the legendary Smalls club from 2019 to 2020. Additionally, he played piano on the soundtrack for the Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
