Makaya McCraven - PopUp Shop (2025) [Hi-Res]

Drummer Makaya McCraven, known as the "beat scientist," releases the album Off the Record, featuring four EPs: Techno Logic, The People's Mixtape, Hidden Out!, and PopUp Shop. Raised in a musical family in Massachusetts and influenced by Chicago's scene, he has redefined modern jazz across his eleven albums by blending it with electronic elements, hip-hop, and improvisation. This project is his most ambitious, creating a unique sound. The EP PopUp Shop stems from an improvisational session in 2015 with guitarist Jeff Parker, vibraphonist Justefan, and bassist Benjamin J. Shephard at The Del Monte Speakeasy. Recordings, completed by 2020 but released later, include four songs with an intro, where McCraven provides creative grooves for the musicians' experiments. The standout track "Los Gatos" features a laid-back neo-soul rhythm and expressive drum fills, highlighting the group's chemistry.
