Mister Water Wet's album "Things Gone and Things Here Still," released on Soda Gong, marks a radical expansion of Iggy Romeu's project. While retaining the signature warmth and tactility that defined his earlier work (which leaned towards sample-based beatcraft and minimalist jazz), this release adopts a more ensemble-minded approach. Romeu invited a stellar cast of supporting musicians, including Memotone and K. Freund, into the fold. The album skillfully weaves live instrumentation such as piano, strings, and reeds into MWW's characteristic lattice of hand percussion and slippery time signatures. The sound balances acoustic and electronic textures, creating a sense of tension between decay and presence, as suggested by the album's title. Musical moments range from refracted chamber sessions to slowed-down, dream-like hip-hop instrumentals, where memory functions as a mutable and resonant living fabric rather than nostalgia.
