Summary (in English): "Häxan" (The Witches) is a legendary Swedish silent film from 1922 directed by Benjamin Christensen and filmed in Denmark. The movie, which marked its centenary in 2022, explores the scientific hypothesis that medieval witches suffered from the same hysteria as psychiatric patients of the early 20th century. However, the film is not strictly scientific, presenting instead a mixture of horror, the grotesque, and black humor. The plot features scenes such as grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath, leading to its censorship in many countries due to its graphic depictions of the occult, nudity, sexual perversion, and anti-clericalism. The picture, which was based on Christensen's study of the medieval inquisitor's guide Malleus Maleficarum, became the most expensive Scandinavian silent film ever made due to its meticulous recreation of medieval scenes. An abbreviated 77-minute version was released in 1968, featuring the original 1922 film narrated by William S. Burroughs, with an eclectic jazz soundtrack by Daniel Humair that included Jean-Luc Ponty on the violin.
