Jim Jones All Stars once again unleash upon us all their intense, high-octane and evangelical fusion of hard driving rock’n’roll, garage rock, gritty rhythm and blues and gospel through the release of their new live album, Get Down ~ Get With It. And there is no question at all that this electrifying and explosive collection of songs perfectly documents the sound of a band who are pioneering the revival of an age-old rock’n’roll spirit and supercharging it to a whole new and unprecedented level.

It was back in 2022 when the first seeds were being sown for the new rock’n’roll venture by Jim Jones with a batch of new songs being recorded in Memphis, resulting in the release of the first single, It’s Your Voodoo Working, in October of that year. This heralded the birth of Jim Jones All Stars and it was time for the world to wake up again and take note. A whole series of live shows followed as this intense and highly energised wall of sound followed a relentless path across uncharted waters, with their debut album Ain’t No Peril arriving in glorious sonic technicolour in September 2023 to further cement their position within the epicentre of the rock’n’roll world.

Fast forward to 2025, following on from some prestigious support slots for the likes of The Black Crowes and Ginger Wildheart, and we now get the release of a live album Get Down ~ Get With It which documents their live performances over these past couple of years. As Jim explains, “Get Down ~ Get With It is a bookend of where the band is at right now and it’s a cool way to mark the end of this chapter of the band before we release our sophomore album in 2026.”

As Marc Riley so aptly pointed out during one of the All Stars BBC6 radio sessions, Jim Jones has “something of a reputation” for “always being in one of the best rock’n’roll bands around.” This is as true as ever with this new band who combine the raw energy of Little Richard from that early classic rock’n’roll era with the hard hitting and powerhouse delivery of the likes of MC5 and Stooges, whilst also infusing a whole heap of soul. Jim is an artist who has always been steeped in old school rock’n’roll traditions, with an attitude to match which exudes through his always commanding stage presence, and there is little doubt that this shines very brightly throughout this outstanding live album.

As the needle hits the first groove, we hear the band make it on stage amidst a cacophony of noise as the drums pound, the saxes wail, the keys twinkle and the guitars roar with Jim exclaiming “Get down, get with it” and tenor sax player Stuart Dace announcing their arrival. The impact is immediate and intense and gives us an insight into what is to follow over the coming hour or so as the crunching backbeat of Cement Mixer launches a sonic landslide into the darkest corners of our mind. This epic blast of bump and grind positively steamrollers the performance into action and, with barely a pause for breath, we hear Jim declaring “Ain’t no smoke without fire” as the fuzz drenched guitar of Carlton Mounsher and blur of the manic fingerwork on Elliot Mortimer’s keyboard heralds another Revue classic in Burning Your House Down.
