Make Your Heart Home is the latest EP from Silver Wolf Band, a four-piece Indigenous folk-rock band from Labrador made up of band members Jamie Jackman (Guitar, Vocals), Matthew Barrett (Piano, Keyboards, Vocals), Justin Jackman (Drums and Percussion), and Bon Pardy (Bass, Vocals). Lively, engaging, and self-assured performances of honest and sincere lyrical music is what makes Silver Wolf Band one of the most in-demand music groups from Labrador.
Their music is piano driven and rich in harmony. Lyrically, their songs are shaped and informed by family, community, love, and their homeland itself. Make Your Heart Home is no exception. While the EP tackles issues like suicide and loss, it also celebrates community, family and the vast beauty of Labrador. They have been referred to as the “Wilco of Labrador” and their three album releases to date have garnered them a Music PEI award nomination, three Music NL award nominations, and a Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Award nomination. With every performance, they offer their audience an uplifting and enthusiastic performance of original music, along with their renditions of popular favourites by celebrated Labrador songwriters and musicians.
Silver Wolf Band’s new EP blends elements of folk songwriting with a rock vibe, crafting a sound that’s as grounded as it is emotionally resonant.
“Willows and Sand” has a driving piano line that provides a counterbalance to the weight of the lyrics. The anguish of losing a family member by suicide is evident in Jackman’s vocals, “Only the sound of life sighing / At the last time we die trying.” The land itself figures strongly in this song, providing an embrace and even solace to a family who must find its way forward after such tragedy. On the flip side, “Coffee Pots,”with its rich mix of guitars, piano, and percussion, carries a folk-rock feel that underscores its message: life comes with its share of adversity, but we don’t have to face it alone. Honest and unpolished, “Coffee Pots” is a reminder of the strength found in connection with family and community.
“North Star” makes reference to a beloved children’s book from Labrador and like many Silver Wolf Band songs, highlights the connection between nature, relationships and culture.
“All I Love Has Gone Away” leans into a tradition of country songs that lament on loss. With the addition of Patrick Moran on fiddle and their signature, heart-filled harmonies, this song is a balm for those suffering loss.
“Halloween Clothes” highlights the magic of Silver Wolf Band’s harmonies. While a strong piano line leads this song, guitars and vocals help make this one that will have the audience singing along.
“This Is My Home” is a love song to Labrador written by Harry Martin. This beloved song pays homage to the steadfast mountains, harsh weather, tenacious animals, and vast beauty that both comforts and inspires Silver Wolf Band every day.
Listening to their new EP Make Your Heart Home gives the listener insight into the heartache and joy of living in the north and inspires with its resilience and compassion.
