Composer and saxophonist Robin Verheyen created the work "Jakob's Mirror," inspired by the life and art of Belgian painter Jakob Smits. Verheyen retreated to Connecticut to reflect on Smits, who is known for his personal and timeless depictions of the Belgian Campine. Smits' work became a vehicle for Verheyen's own exploration of identity, memory, and a sense of belonging. Verheyen's music, written for the Goeyvaerts String Trio and percussionist Robin Schulkowsky, is not a literal translation of the paintings but embodies their atmosphere and incorporates elements of music from Smits' era, such as a Flemish folk song. The composition is a synthesis of European harmonic traditions and jazz's rhythmic vitality, containing echoes of Verheyen's roots in the Campine. "Jakob's Mirror" is viewed as both an homage to the painter and a self-portrait of the composer, serving as a meditation on landscape, light, and the enduring pull of home.
