Ginger Beef - Ginger Beef (2025)

The musical duo Ginger Beef, composed of producer MSG (Warren Tse) and flutist Jiajia Li, aims to revive the extinct genre of instrumental pop with their self-titled debut album. MSG argues that lyrics "cheat" in evoking emotion, as classical and film music prove that music can be deeply resonant without words. The group was formed in 2021 when Li, collaborating with her husband MSG, created the instrumental track "Flashback" for a Camp Sled Island event. To bring instrumental pop back into the mainstream, Ginger Beef splices DNA from other genres, describing their music as "unabashedly pop" but "jazz-adjacent," citing bands like The Police and Steely Dan. MSG contributes rock and jazz sensibilities, while Li, with her classical training (Master's in flute performance), provides virtuosic musicianship, drawing inspiration, notably from traditional Chinese music her mother played in her childhood.
