Sophia Domancich - Wishes (2025) [Hi-Res]

French pianist Sophia Domancich is known for making the art of the jazz trio a central theme of her work, constantly redefining its formal boundaries. Starting with traditional lineups in the 1990s and 2000s, Domancich gradually delved into freer and more experimental forms, collaborating with American free musicians such as William Parker, Hamid Drake, Mark Helias, and Andrew Cyrille. Her current project, the album Wishes, continues this aesthetic of lyrical abstraction, inspired by the free jazz of the 1960s and 70s (in the spirit of Paul Bley or Marilyn Crispell). In Wishes, she presents her intimate and experimental vision alongside bassist Mark Helias and drummer Eric McPherson. Domancich's music is characterized by an alternation of intense meditative moments and sudden bursts of "strangled lyricism," creating a sound fabric that is "pulsional, cerebral, and constantly inventive," based on the complex and shifting interplay of the three voices, confirming her undeniable artistic maturity and individuality.
