It's a flare up and an extended stay-- a collection of songs for the grief of one person-- the songs they never got to hear. All we wanted to say when there's nothing left to say.

Grief comes in like a flash, like a winter hare. In the winter, its coat looks less bleak, more like fitting in. But in the summer, for all its change, it is still a flash of white exposed to the elements.

This is a pause on the trajectory of our albums to nod to a person who was behind us all the way for as long as we've been a band, and even longer than we've been a band. This is for Tom, who we can still hear saying with every choice we make-- That's so cool, kid. Damn, that's so cool. Keep going, kid.

And for Ann, too, who gave us the great honor of sharing not only in her life and the life of her husband Tom, but also letting us in to share her grief. There are few things we take with greater honor than this.
