Husky Gawenda sounds increasingly comfortable away from his full band, Husky, on this third solo album. Taking advantage of being on his own, the Melbourne singer-songwriter released a series of songs on a monthly basis, each accompanied by a new chapter in a story recounting the challenged love between two lifelong friends named Jacob and June. The songs coalesce as Storms, but you need not have found and read the related chapters to appreciate Gawenda’s clear-eyed, often conversational approach. He hovers mostly around the mode of classic ’60s folk, with the skeletal opener “Silencio” nodding to Simon & Garfunkel not just in the close harmonies of guest duo Charm of Finches but in passing mentions of rosemary and silence.
Derived from a dream sequence in the story, that song also introduces the purity of tone and nature-based imagery that Gawenda fosters across the album, though he does set one song (and story chapter) in the titular suburban cinema of “The Astor”. He also varies his approach in some notable ways, from the playful strings rustling and flitting through “Galaxy Sombrero” to the darker crawl of the centrepiece “Gold Tongue”. The uncrowded arrangements mean that our focus remains squarely on Gawenda’s soft voice and pensive lyrics, both reflecting on the past with a lingering bittersweetness.
