SOLÉYÉ by Granmoun LÉLÉ, originally released in 1995, is a cornerstone of ritual maloya and a key document in Réunion Island’s musical history. Granmoun LÉLÉ, born Julien Philéas, was more than just a musician; he was a griot—a guardian of memory and cultural guide who channeled ancestral knowledge through his stories, drums, and voice. The album, recorded with his family troupe, the Philéas ensemble, captures the essence of the servis kabaré, a night-long ritual of trance and invocation. The album’s structure mirrors the ceremony's cycle, opening with a version of “Soléyé” (meaning “bathed in sun”) at sunset and concluding with the final version at sunrise. The 2025 official reissue by BABANI & KRÉOL ART, produced in close collaboration with the Philéas family, features fully restored audio and updated artwork, making this essential Creole masterpiece available again on vinyl and digital.
