The album Not for Kids Only by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, honored as a Notable Children's Recording by the American Library Association, is a timeless collection of folky and playful songs aimed at both children and parents. Many of the tracks on the album, originally released in 1993, were songs Garcia and Grisman (Dawg) had learned in the early 1960s, using the Old-Time Strong Band Songbook as a lyrical source. This reissue expands the track list with bonus material on Side D, including alternate versions and previously unissued takes from the original sessions. Reflecting on the album's spirit, Jerry Garcia shared that children enjoy "weird shit" and "crazy stuff," expressing a trust in their ability to handle something more complex than "terminal niceness."
