Pete Seeger, Jane Sapp, Si Kahn - Carry It On: Songs Of America's Working People (1986)

In 1941, 22-year-old Pete Seeger recorded union songs with the Almanac Singers for the album Talking Union and Other Songs. Forty-five years later, at the age of 67, Seeger teamed up with Jane Sapp and Si Kahn to record a new album for Flying Fish Records, maintaining the same spirit and utilizing some of the original songs. The album was primarily recorded at Fred Hellerman's studio in Connecticut with a small backing band, including Hellerman (a former member of The Weavers) on synthesizer, Arlen Roth on guitar, and John Miller on bass, accompanying instruments played by Seeger (banjo, 12-string guitar), Sapp (piano), and Kahn (acoustic guitar). A few tracks, however, are solo live recordings of Seeger made in Chicago, where he interacts with the audience. Producer Bruce Kaplan noted that the studio recording is not a "smooth" or "sophisticated" one, as the emphasis was placed on conveying the message of labor solidarity rather than on complex arrangements or multiple takes. Kahn, Sapp, and Seeger appear accustomed to performing solo, and their collaborative recording, which sounds somewhat improvisational, possesses a "frisky charm." The album functions as a collection of union songs chronicling the struggles of employees for fair working conditions against unfair corporate practices, a message the author finds remains as relevant today as it was at the beginning of Seeger's career.
