Alan Bullard's "O Come, Emmanuel" is an Advent cantata based on the Large Antiphon "O". This is the second of three cantatas for similar forces written
by Bullard in subsequent years. The first was the cantata "Wonderful Cross" (2011), recorded by the Selwyn College Choir (REGCD404). "O Come Emmanuel" (2012) is dedicated to
To Sarah McDonald and the Selwyn College Chapel Choir, and was first performed at a service at Selwyn College Chapel on Advent Sunday, December 1
, 2013.
The rest of this CD contains ten new Christmas carols. The dates of the poems chosen by Alan Bullard vary from the
present day to the distant past, but they all tell the same story, beloved by Christians for centuries.
The Selwyn College Choir, led by Sarah McDonald, has received increasing critical acclaim in recent years, not least for its promotion
of works by living composers. Their previous album, The Eternal Ecstasy, stayed on the Specialist Classical Charts for several weeks and was recognized
Album of the Week on Classicfm in July 2015.
