Awakening is the long-awaited reissue of a hidden gem of spiritual folk-rock, originally released in 1980 as a limited private press on the Wondrousound label. The album is the creative project of Buddhist nun Bhikshuni Heng-yin, created within the "City of Ten Thousand Buddhas" community in California. The music presents a unique synthesis of Western folk aesthetics, country-rock, and psychedelia with profound lyrics based on the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Celia Hollander's vocals, accompanied by rich arrangements featuring violin, cello, and pedal steel, create an atmospheric sound that critics compare to the works of Joni Mitchell, but within the context of sacred music. The Numero Group has restored this recording, returning an artifact previously available only to a narrow circle of collectors.
