Latin America might not be the first locale on people’s minds when it comes to thinking of 19th and 20th-century piano music. But perhaps it should be, suggests Argentinean pianist and Steinway artist Rosa Antonelli. Herself a descendant of Europeans who immigrated to the Americas two centuries ago, she soulfully performs ROMANZA: Sounds of Passion from Latin America.

While most listeners are likely familiar with the behemoth Piazzolla (who also features), few may recognize the giants that precede him: composers from Cuba, Uruguay, Colombia, Mexico and Brazil. While rooted in European romanticism, these works are animated by an expansive spirit that is uniquely Latin — yet universally enchanting.
