Though primarily known as a singer/songwriter on his own and with his original band sparkle*jets u.k., Simmons really enjoys recording other people's songs and has released a number of covers albums and tribute tracks on his own as well as with recording project Popdudes. This all new collection is a really fun and great sounding addition to that catalog, ranging from Pop Rock bangers to thoughtful ballads, with surprises and delights at every turn! Jump on board this rocket ship of nostalgia and fun!
A very competently done covers album from Michael Simmons whose self-penned songs have graced his collaborative records with The Popdudes or sparkle*jets u.k., among others, as well as his own solo outings before this one.
Once in a while, the California-based artist indulges his love of great pop-rock songs and the end result is once again beautiful, whether covering Squeeze‘s ‘Is That Love’ or Fountains of Wayne‘s ‘Radiation Vibe’, The Beach Boys’ ‘Sail On, Sailor’ or Steely Dan‘s ‘Any Major Dude Will Tell You’ (and seven more, among which songs by The Grass Roots and Genesis).
My favorite might well be World Party’s ‘Is It Like Today?’, as I still have in mind the recent passing of Karl Wallinger.
