Zhongyu - Super Z Attack Team (2025)

Nine years after their debut on Moonjune Records, Zhongyu returns with a new album, following significant changes in lineup and production methods. The group has transitioned from a quintet to a trio, comprising bandleader Jon Davis (Chapman Stick, synthesizers, guzheng), James DeJoie (woodwinds), and Randy Doak (drums). Due to the departure of two members, the recording process shifted from live studio sessions to piecemeal overdubbing.

The new release features nine instrumental tracks blending jazz, progressive rock, ambient, math-funk, and elements of world music. The album's sound is likened to an evolution of King Crimson's Discipline, albeit without vocals. The arrangements are complex and diverse, ranging from dreamy ambient textures to aggressive rhythmic structures enriched with field recordings and experimental sounds. Despite the long hiatus, the work is characterized by high material quality and eclectic style.
