Grandpa Elliott - Sugar Sweet (2009)

New Orleans street musician Grandpa Elliott (Elliott Small) achieved global fame through his participation in a viral video for the Playing for Change project. At the age of 64, he released his debut studio album, Sugar Sweet. Despite possessing strong vocals that have survived decades of performing in the French Quarter, the record is assessed as pleasant but lacking in originality. The release's primary flaws include a lack of original material, a reliance on overplayed covers of classic hits, and the bland sound of the backing band. The cautious and safe performance style, effective for busking, diminishes the artist's uniqueness in a studio setting, reducing him to the level of a generic Blues and R&B vocalist.
