Bob Dylan's debut album, recorded in November 1961, is based on the repertoire he performed in Greenwich Village coffee houses. Dylan positions himself as a folk reformer, combining Woody Guthrie's "talking blues" with unique phrasing and personal interpretation of the material. The record consists almost entirely of covers of pre-war traditional songs, spirituals, and delta blues, with the exception of two original compositions, including a tribute to Guthrie. Despite the borrowing of arrangements (which caused a conflict with Dave Van Ronk) and low initial sales, the work demonstrated the artist's immense potential and proved to be a visionary success for producer John Hammond. The album set a high standard in the genre, although it did not capture the full musical range of Dylan at that time.
