Yoron Israel - Inspiration (2026) [Hi-Res]

Acclaimed jazz drummer, percussionist, and Chair of the Percussion Department at Berklee College of Music Yoron Israel is releasing his eighth leader album, Inspiration. The project bridges his long-standing career on the jazz stage—where he has performed alongside luminaries like Ahmad Jamal and Sonny Rollins—with his role as Pastor of Music and Arts at Destiny Life Center International Church in Brockton.

The concept for the record grew out of two main influences: Israel's practice of rearranging spiritual gospel pieces written for his congregation into jazz settings (a technique learned from his mentor James Williams) and the emotional impact of a duo performance of Kenny Werner's "Inspiration" by Werner and Toots Thielemans. Israel opens the album with his own vibraphone-piano duo interpretation of the title track alongside pianist Laszlo Gardony.

Rather than using a fixed working band, Israel assembled a group of long-time collaborators, including Gardony, saxophonist Ian Buss, guitarist Rick Peckham, bassist Avery Sharpe, and vocalist Leah Hinton. The album's repertoire blends straight-ahead jazz, blues, gospel, spirituals, and world music traditions. The tracklist features Israel's original church compositions ("It's All About You, Lord", "For God Knows"), reworked standards ("There Is No Greater Love"), tributes to his formative years in Chicago and Brooklyn ("Nostrand Avenue"), and a mashup combining songs by Michael Jackson and Chick Corea.
