The jazz quartet Philm, established in 2012, has released its third album, Sun Ship. Band leader and tenor saxophonist Philipp Gropper drew inspiration from the work of John Coltrane as well as the metaphor of a "spaceship" suggested by his brother. The album's music is characterized by a complex structure where intellectual rhythmic constructions collide with emotional expression. Drawing on compositional methods akin to those of Tim Berne, the collective pushes the boundaries of the modern jazz language. The musicians balance the strict framework of composed themes with unpredictable free improvisation, all while maintaining the format of a classic quartet.

Philipp Gropper, tenor saxophone
Elias Stemeseder, piano, synthesizer
Andreas Lang, bass
Oliver Steidle, drums
