Richard Carr, Laura Lutzke, Ravenna Lipchik, Caleb Burhans, Clarice Jensen - Over the Ridge (2021)

During the 2020 lockdown, composer and multi-instrumentalist Richard Carr returned to creating notated music after decades of focusing on improvisation. This resulted in twelve pieces for string quartet. For the album recording, Carr enlisted violist Caleb Burhans, who assisted in editing the scores and assembling an ensemble of virtuoso performers previously associated with Max Richter and ACME. The album features eight composed tracks and four group improvisations.

The primary creative method employed was the principle of "emergent structure," wherein the music progresses fluidly from small musical cells without a pre-determined form. This approach was applied to both the notated compositions and the improvisations. Richard Carr possesses over forty years of musical experience, ranging from work with symphony orchestras and jazz ensembles to collaborations with prominent figures in the avant-garde and classical scenes.
