Frescobaldi's Fiori Musicali, or musical flowers, was a publication from the end of his life that offered a sampling of what would have been required of the composer as a working church musician. As such, it provides for the general listener a more pleasing introduction to Frescobaldi's rather difficult idiom that do the undifferentiated collections of toccatas and ricercars with which the composer is usually represented on recordings. Presented here are four sets of the organ music associated with the celebration of a Mass. These included not only quasi-improvisatory pieces of various moods associated with various junctures of the service, but also a set of versets, or instrumental replacements for short text verses, used for the Kyrie of the mass, the rest of which would have been sung. Not only the moods are varied; the listener this way gets the full range of Frescobaldi's attitudes toward the unusually agitated relationship between tradition and innovation in the early seventeenth century, a range that, albeit within a more restricted context, is as broad as Monteverdi's. The Kyries, which are based in various ways on the fragments of chant that precede them (the chant segments are, commendably, actually sung on the disc) represent the most conservative layer, rooted in the devices of Franco-Flemish polyphony. The lighter canzonas and especially the ricercars, which show a harmonic virtuosity that anticipates Bach, represent the other end of the spectrum. The end result is a Frescobaldi program that enables listeners to place themselves in a space resembling that for which the music was intended. Another benefit is the 1676 organ played by American organist Calvert Johnson: located at the Chiesa di Santa Lucia in tiny Serra San Quirico and recently restored, it has a collection of voices that, once you retune your ears to the mean-tone temperament used, adds rich new colors to the music. An especially good choice for classroom illustrations of early organ music and of interest to general listeners for whom Frescobaldi has been not much more than a name.
