Why Something? is the debut release by the Portland, Oregon-based instrumental collective Old Unconscious. The record represents a unique fusion of psychedelic rock, free jazz, and ambient music. The music originated from informal sessions between keyboardist Cory Gray and drummer Matthew Berger, who were later joined by a bassist and a saxophonist. The album's sound is characterized by a cinematic and pastoral atmosphere, where melodic, pre-written structures seamlessly flow into free improvisation. The members describe their approach to recording as an attempt to move away from traditional formats and play "strictly for their own entertainment," giving the music the feeling of a living, breathing organism.
