Old Unconscious is an experimental instrumental collective from Portland that combines structured composition with free improvisation. Originally founded by Cory Gray and Matthew Berger as a recreational studio experiment, the project later expanded to include bassist Perry Pfister and saxophonist Noah Bernstein. The group fundamentally avoids traditional concert venues, preferring an informal atmosphere that fosters spontaneity. Following their 2017 debut release Why Something, the collective issued the album Sunfort on Jealous Butcher Records, recording the basic tracks live in a single night. The philosophy of Old Unconscious centers on continuous creative development, stylistic diversity, and a refusal to adhere to rigid boundaries.
