1939 Ensemble - New Cinema (2018)

Portland-based collective 1939 Ensemble has released their fourth studio album, "NEW CINEMA". Mixed by John McEntire (Tortoise), the record features guest contributions from DJ Logic and Sam Coomes (Quasi). The album's musical style defies easy classification, blending elements reminiscent of Battles' rhythmicity, Miles Davis-esque jazz trumpet, and experimental electronics characteristic of Jaga Jazzist and Amon Tobin.

The group's signature sound is anchored by José Medeles' drums and David Coniglio's vibraphone, enriched by trumpet, synthesizers, and guitar work from Josh Thomas and Knate Carter. The album is noted for its cinematic quality and wide dynamic range, shifting from aggressive garage tracks to meditative, atmospheric compositions. The recording maintains the energy of a live performance while offering studio-level fidelity, providing a multi-layered listening experience.
