Going back to Kelly's folk rock days, "Dig a Little Deeper" was produced by Kiya Heartwood from the Stealin' Horses band of the 90s, who hung out on the Arista label. Kelly played with Stealin' Horses for several years, toured and performed at Farm Aid. The album Dig A Little Deeper, created by engineer Les Campbell, features songs written on acoustic guitar and recorded with heavy rock influences combining Richie's electric and acoustic guitars.
Nine of the 11 tracks were written by Kelly. Poignant but not self-pitying, they show Kelly at her most vulnerable. Terry Williamson plays bass, and Eric Maylaben complements the band with powerful drumming, which perfectly emphasizes the tonality and emotion of Richie's songs. "It's Rainin' in My Head" is about a relationship that loses trust due to lies. "Can't Stop Me From Cryin'" conveys the agonizing choice of expressing heartache rather than hiding it. "Ripped & Torn" is about the inevitable desire for things to be different. The brooding "Dig A Little Deeper" reflects a little-known aspect of Richie's roots, but also expands her sound with the American-style songs "Is Anybody Listening?" and "Cracked & Bent". These efforts propel Richie forward musically, while maintaining the integrity of her powerful vocals and guitar playing. kellyrichey.bandcamp.com
"I'm known for playing electric guitar, but songwriting is as much a part of my soul as performing, and I really feel like 'Dig A Little Deeper' represents a complete set of instruments for the first time." That's what Kelly Richie said about "Dig A Little Deeper," an 11-song album featuring nine original Richie tunes. "Dig A Little Deeper" is a heartbreaking synthesis of Richie's outstanding guitar work, honest, soulful lyrics and sensual vocals. Initially, "Dig A Little Deeper" was conceived as an acoustic solo release, but turned into a studio project by KRB.
These efforts confidently propel Richie forward musically, while maintaining the integrity of her powerful guitar playing and vocal power, for which she is renowned. This album is absolutely necessary for those fans who want to get to know Kelly Richie better, in addition to her ability to play the electric guitar! kellyrichey.com
