Steve Lehman Octet - Mise en Abîme (2014)

Steve Lehman and his octet present Mise en Abîme, an album that further develops the synthesis of jazz improvisation and spectral composition. Lehman integrates live electronics and a custom-modified vibraphone into the ensemble's palette to facilitate complex microtonal structures. Despite its high intellectual complexity, the music maintains a visceral energy and drive.

A significant component of the project is the deconstruction of Bud Powell's legacy, as Lehman reinterprets the harmonic frameworks of the bebop legend within a spectral domain. The album showcases the evolution of the ensemble, which through years of touring has become a finely-tuned machine capable of navigating innovative challenges in rhythm, form, and electro-acoustic improvisation.
