Two intriguing sonatas form the backbone of this release but the interesting work to discover here is the 7 variations. Composed in 1801 they form the fourth cycle of his chamber variations that were based on themes from Mozart’s opera arias. Ivan Monighetti, described by Penderecki as a ‘phenomenal cellist’ and was Rostropovich’s last student at the Moscow Conservatory.
