Charles Mackerras, whose centenary we celebrated with the release of the complete Warner recordings, now available in a superb box set, was a curious conductor and musicologist with eclectic tastes. A great lover of Czech music (he was, for example, one of the foremost specialists in the music of Janáček), he recorded with the Philharmonia brilliant excerpts from Dvořák's Slavonic Dances and Smetana's The Bartered Bride early in his career. Coupled with other pieces inspired by Central and Eastern European folklore, this newly remastered recording is available for the first time digitally.
