Norwegian oboist-composer Ivar Lunde Jr. has lived in the United States for so long that his work has become a prime example of fusing two very different transatlantic strengths: European heritage and American spontaneity. MEDITATION AT DAWN is a philosophical, profound yet immensely diverting album, blending the modern and the traditional with great vigor.
Despite the varying orchestration — a piano concerto, a cello-piano piece, a string-quartet, and choral-symphonic pieces — Lunde’s voice distinctly stands out. Across the pond, Lunde has historically been programmed alongside Shostakovich, and it’s easy to see why: Lunde harbors the same predilection for grand motifs, percussive rhythms and aesthetic dissonance. MEDITATION AT DAWN, in spite of its serene title, is stirring rather than placid.
