In 2026, ABC Jazz is thrilled to be celebrating 50 years of its flagship program: Jazztrack. Veteran presenter Jim McLeod conceived the show in January, 1976 - and he was followed by Mal Stanley from 2004 onwards.
Over the decades, Jazztrack has played a key role in chronicling the development of the jazz scene around Australia, recording and broadcasting countless musicians both in the studio and on-stage. As we celebrate the program's 50th this year, ABC Jazz has a new compilation out featuring some of the stand-out sessions from the past five decades.
This album brings together some of the riches to be found among the many fine studio recordings made for Jazztrack. The main difficulty, says Mal Stanley, "was not what to choose but what to leave out! With hundreds of recording sessions to explore, this can only be a small representation of the incredible music-making that has occurred – and still occurs – in Australia."
