Darwisch Basem, Cairo Steps - Samu (2026) [Hi-Res]

The album "Samu" is a deeply personal and conceptual work by the Egyptian composer and oud master Basem Darwisch. The title track was originally written in 2000 for his son, Samuel. Decades later, this melody, which young Samuel sang as a child (eventually becoming the renowned electronic artist Sam Shure), has been given a new life. In 2022, Basem rediscovered the original recording and arranged it for his ensemble, Cairo Steps.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2025 when Maestro George Kolta encouraged the creation of a full orchestration. The recording was completed in Budapest with the prestigious Budapest Scoring Orchestra, alongside Cairo Steps musicians from Egypt, Germany, and Hungary. The release also features collaborations with the German quartet Quadro Nuevo, highlighting the multicultural nature of the project that blends Middle Eastern traditions, European jazz, and classical heritage.
