"Fanjiry" is a solo project by Malagasy musician Damily, marking his debut as a vocalist while reimagining the tsapiky genre through a minimalist lens. Recorded live to analog tape, the album strips the traditional sound down to a single guitar and voice, creating a dense, rhythmic atmosphere that replaces the need for a full band. The work intertwines the traditional rhythms of southern Madagascar with the artist's personal memories, 1980s East African musical influences, and local healing rituals. Moving away from high-energy ceremony music toward deep, intimate trance, the record explores the intersection of personal identity and universal musical heritage.
