Tilaye Gebre is a preeminent Ethiopian saxophonist and arranger whose influence defined the sound of Ethiopian popular music during the 1970s. Beginning his formal education at the National Theatre in Addis Ababa, he became a pivotal member of iconic ensembles such as the Dahlak Band and Walias Band. Gebre's work is characterized by an innovative synthesis of traditional Ethiopian melodies with Western genres, including soul, funk, and psychedelic rock. Despite the political upheaval and censorship of the Derg regime, he remained a central figure in the domestic scene before eventually relocating to the United States. There, he elevated Ethiopian music to a global stage, performing at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall. His six-decade legacy includes collaborations with the foremost stars of Ethiopia’s "Golden Age."
