As Nikolaus Harnoncourt approaches his 80th birthday next month, he shows no signs of curbing his insatiable musical curiosity. Harnoncourt was one of the true pioneers of period instrument performance in the 1960s and 70s, a musician deeply steeped in the Central European performance tradition. So the very thought of him conducting such an archetypal American opera as Porgy and Bess with the energy and understanding he displays here seems almost surreal. But, as the booklet accompanying this recording makes clear, Harnoncourt has a profound admiration for Gershwin's most ambitious stage work—"music of universal significance," as he calls it—and he details and justifies his selection of numbers, including those added from the composer's manuscripts, in this often cumbersome score. The result, presented here, based on stage performances
in Graz this summer, runs just under three hours. Overall, the cast, featuring Jonathan Lemalu as Porgy, Isabelle Kabatu as Bess, and Michael Forest as Sporting Life, is excellent, though one or two voices seem a little stiff and more constrained than Gershwin's vocal parts require. But
it is Harnoncourt's astonishingly energetic conducting, coupled with the stunningly precise playing of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, that truly ignites this performance.
And his comments on the aria from Mozart's The Magic Flute, quoted in the album liner notes, so perfectly capture the opera's unique power that they justify listening to the entire album.
