For this well-rounded set, pianist Kenny Drew, Jr. is heard unaccompanied, in a trio, and in groups as large as a sextet. He performs five of his originals, two by his father (the major bop pianist Kenny Drew), the obscure "The First Love Letter," and a reharmonized "Sweet and Lovely." Drew Jr. is the main solo star, but also gives plenty of space for trumpeter Michael Mossman, Ravi Coltrane on tenor and soprano, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson, with bassist Lynn Seaton and drummer Tony Reedus offering stimulating support. Some of the music is quite complex, but it always swings while keeping one guessing.
